🗑️ YOUR FAILED 3D PRINT MIGHT NOT BE TRASH ANYMORE. Broken prototypes, supports, scraps and prints that didn’t come out right can leave makers with piles of plastic. But 16-year-old Massachusetts student Benjamin Davis looked at that waste and saw something completely different: material that could potentially become 3D-printing filament all over again.

🧵 HE BUILT A MACHINE TO TURN WASTE BACK INTO FILAMENT. Davis developed a desktop plastic-recycling system capable of processing discarded 3D-printing material and other plastics into reusable filament. Instead of the plastic’s journey ending after one failed print, his idea gives that material a path back to the printer.

♻️ FAILED PRINT → RECYCLE → NEW FILAMENT → PRINT AGAIN. That’s what makes the idea so interesting for makers. A mistake normally means wasted material. Davis’ project explores a more circular process: take discarded printing plastic, process it, turn it into filament and give that material another opportunity to become something useful.

⚙️ HE COMBINED TWO MANUFACTURING PROCESSES INTO ONE SYSTEM. His project, called “From Crude to Extrude,” combines extrusion and pultrusion technologies into a single filament-production system. The design was developed to make recycled filament production more efficient and accessible.

🤯 HE SPENT MORE THAN 800 HOURS BUILDING IT. This wasn’t something Davis put together during one weekend. Development involved 800+ hours, more than 50 iterations and seven subsystems. That meant testing, rebuilding and refining the machine again and again.

💰 THEN HIS INVENTION HELPED HIM WIN $75,000. Davis took the project to the 2025 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, where he became one of two students to receive a $75,000 Regeneron Young Scientist Award. His project also earned first place in its Engineering Technology category.

🏠 THE BIG IDEA IS MAKING RECYCLING MORE ACCESSIBLE. Commercial plastic-recycling equipment can be expensive, but Davis designed his system around desktop-scale manufacturing. His work explores how recycling technology could become more practical for makers, schools and smaller manufacturing environments.
